2007-2008 Neighborhood Bridges Residency Program

Stowe academy, 7th Grade

Inquiry Question:

"How can I use storytelling, creative writing and performance to illuminate the theme of war?"

Through a partnership between Adventure Stage Chicago and Stowe Fine & Performing Arts Academy, the students examined diferent genres of storytelling and attended ASC's production of The Cay, by Gayle Cornelison. Having critical discussions of well-known stories helped students identify themes and realize how the stories we choose to tell reflect our culture. Through acting and creative writing exercises, students focused on the theme of war. When they returned to ASC they presented three folktales that dealt with issues surrounding war and conflict - Polly and the Stupid Wolf, A Blind Man Catches a Bird, and The Black Hound.

"Positive Impressions"

“The performance certianly left a positive impression on the students about attending and appreciating live performances! They are also more likely to pursue the reading of plays and novels upon which plays are based. The entire experience was extremely worthwhile, leaving a lasting, motivating impact.”
