Neighborhood Bridges

PRE-SHOW WORKSHOPS FOR STUDENTS

To prepare your students to engage critically with their upcoming field trip, ASC offers 90-minute pre-show workshops! An ASC teaching artist will come to your classroom to facilitate participatory, arts-integrated activities that help students understand the characters, conflicts, and questions raised by the play.

TEACHER IN-SERVICES

ASC offers half-day and full-day teacher in-services to Chicago-area schools. Professional teaching artists facilitate interactive exercises that provide teachers with concrete ways to incorporate drama into their core curriculum. Activities connect directly to ISBE goals and standards and are immediately applicable in the classroom.

CLASSROOM RESIDENCIES

Each year, ASC offers a limited number of classroom residencies we call Neighborhood Bridges. Classrooms throughout Chicago team up with ASC teaching artists to identify and explore themes rooted in the season. Teaching artists partner with classroom teachers to determine which areas of their curriculum can be investigated deeply with an arts-integration approach. Teachers should conclude each partnership with a tested model for arts-integrated lesson-planning and implementation which they can recreate and redevelop over time and across the curriculum. Partnerships are currently offered for intermediate and upper grade elementary classrooms and are organized around one ASC production in the fall, winter, or spring.

Participating Classrooms Receive:
  • Partnership – 20 residency hours with a professional theatre artist
  • Exposure – Tickets and transportation for a single Adventure Stage performance and the opportunity to present the students’ learning on the Vittum Theater stage
  • Resources – Learning Guide, Promptbook, lesson plans, and supplies

Neighborhood Bridges was developed by The Children’s Theatre of Minneapolis.  Visit www.neighborhoodbridges.org to learn more or click here to view our press release. For more information about pricing and logistics, please contact Merissa Shunk, Director of Education, at 773.278.7471 ext. 173.

"Positive Impressions"

“The performance certianly left a positive impression on the students about attending and appreciating live performances! They are also more likely to pursue the reading of plays and novels upon which plays are based. The entire experience was extremely worthwhile, leaving a lasting, motivating impact.”
