2006-2007 Neighborhood Bridges Residency Program

(formerly the vittum learning partnership)

Healy elementary school, 8th grade

Inquiry Question:

"How can I use visual art and drama to compare and contrast mythological and real-life heroes? How can I develop skills that allow us to create theatrical pieces that explore civil rights?"

Students at Healy worked with an Adventure Stage Chicago (then known as the Vittum Theater) Teaching Artist to explore Homer's epic poem, The Odyssey. Through journal entries, collage, storyboards, discussion, and physical "portraits," students explored the stories and dilemmas driving Homer's tale. Moreover, they used these arts-integration strategies to reflect upon the qualities of a hero. While these starting points were the same, each of the culminating projects was quite distinct.

In addition to sharing some of the visual art created over the course of the residency, each class demonstrated their matery of how to use body, mind, and voice to communicate on a stage. Scenes were presented that explored some real-life heroes that have impacted the students' lives as well as scenes that offered modern adaptations of Homer's epic poem, The Odyssey.

"Positive Impressions"

“The performance certianly left a positive impression on the students about attending and appreciating live performances! They are also more likely to pursue the reading of plays and novels upon which plays are based. The entire experience was extremely worthwhile, leaving a lasting, motivating impact.”
