2007-2008 Neighborhood Bridges Residency Program

Gladstone Elementary, 6th Grade

Inquiry Question:

"How can I use storytelling, creative writing and performance to investigate prejudice and survival?"

Gladstone Elementary School and Adventure Stage Chicago partnered to analyze the themes of prejudice and survival in various story genres.Through theatre and creative writing, Mrs. Roth's 6th grade drama class explored these themes before attending ASC's production of The Cay, by Gayle Cornelison. Students then worked in groups to prepare scenes from the folktale The Legend of John Henry which they performed on ASC's stage in February, 2008.

"Positive Impressions"

“The performance certianly left a positive impression on the students about attending and appreciating live performances! They are also more likely to pursue the reading of plays and novels upon which plays are based. The entire experience was extremely worthwhile, leaving a lasting, motivating impact.”
